Lee Carrillo to Santa Monica in 2 days

Hi Tom,

Think it feasible to do the 1st two recommended days (Lee Carrillo to Malibu Pier) in one day (and still keep mostly to the shore)?  Predicted tides on the day I'm looking at are:

highest tide: 3am

lowest tide: 11:30am

next high tide: 6pm

Thanks,

Greg

  • Greg,

It looks like the tides will be very favorable for your hike, but you will need to leave the shore and take a few short strolls through the neighborhood.  This is true anytime.  There are a couple of sections of shoreline that are impassable even at low tide.

You are planning a 19.3 mile hiking day.  We are pretty slow hikers, stopping to swim, tide pool, etc. So, we average about 2 miles/hour.  Your hike would take us 9-10 hours.

The spots that should be the most difficult to pass if the tide is not low are Lechuza Pt./Trancas Beach at 5-6 miles, the eastern end of Dume Cove at 11.8 miles, and Puerco city Beach to Amarillo Beach at 17.8 miles.  I'd leave early enough to hit Dume Cove within two hours of low tide.

Check out The Route section at the end of each chapter of Walkabout Malibu to Mexico: Hiking Inn to Inn.  To get more details on challenging sections and alternative routes.

    Have a great walkabout.

    Tom
