It is good to make reservations at least a month in advance, even earlier if you know your dates. Here are a couple of places that book up early.
The Crystal Cove Beach Cottages look like a great place to stay on the first day of the Newport Beach to San Clemente walkabout. I have never planned far enough ahead to land a reservation. If you don’t stay at Crystal Cove, hike another four miles to Laguna Beach. Lots of places to stay there. The Beachcomber Café (949-376-6900) at Crystal Cove is a great place to stop for lunch.
There are many places to stay in Pacific Beach at the end of the first day’s hike from La Jolla to the border, but the cottages of the Crystal Pier Hotel and Cottages are unique. The cottages line a private pier, so your sleep will be soothed by the action of the waves.
Both these inns may require a two day minimum.
