Since the  Blue Heron Inn seems to be closed and I can't find a directory listing for a Red Rabbit Inn, I wondered if anyone knew a place to spend the night in Bolinas?  (Other than Smiley's?)

The town seems to have been taken over by Air BnB, and I wasn't able to find any listings that didn't require at least two nights' stay.

  • Chris,

I was speaking at REI Saratoga, and a couple who had recently hiked the Marin Coast Walkabout told me the Blue Heron in Bolinas has reopened as 11 Wharf Rd.  It still looks like a great place to stay.

    • Thanks, Tom!  Indeed, I found their website no problem --but they also want a two-night minimum on weekends.  In the end, what we have decided to do is to convert it to a 3-day, 2-night walk:

      1)  Friday:  Sausalito to Muir Beach, stay at the Pelican

      2)  Saturday:  Muir Beach to Stinson Beach (with a little added loop at the north end of Muir Woods to get the mileage up), and stay at the motel --Redwood Haus' reservation site has been down for weeks, and they are not answering their phone in the evenings; the Sandpiper also has a two-night minimum.

      3)  Sunday:  Stinson Beach to ?? via Willow Camp to Coastal Trail to Bolinas Ridge Fire Road.  I don't think we'll make it all the way to Olema; we're thinking we may turn off at Shafter Grade and take it down to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and get picked up there, which I think cuts off about 4 miles.

  • Chris,

Here are the phone numbers for the Red Rabbit Inn from Walkabout Northern California - Hiking Inn to Inn, 415-868-0931 and 415-250-5298.  I'm not sure they are still operating.  You can also try the Grand Hotel, 415-868-1757.  Heidi and I stayed at Smiley's a few months ago, and it was nice - clean and quiet.

    Good luck,

    • Chris,

I'm not sure about other options besides Smiley's, but I've enjoyed staying there. It's comfortable, and Smiley's is a classic - continuously operated for more than 150 years, right through prohibition. There's a short and sweet history on their webpage. Usually a fun crowd and good music.

Anyone else have suggestions for a one night stay in Bolinas?

      Emily
